What a great story, Mark. I've enjoyed reading about your travels through Spain. My family and I will be visiting Spain in September and it's nice to read of others' experiences. I really can't wait to visit this fascinating country.

The marvelous photo of all those boots reminds me of the deep affection I hold for every pair of hiking boots I've owned. In the cracked leather and the ingrained mud, in the worn down soles and the scuffed toes, lie a multitude of tales.
Walking, I believe, is the great equalizer. Your tale of El Camino reminds me how people are drawn together by the simple act of sharing the same trail. We bond through trials and tribulations, blisters and back aches, and the grand adventure of it all. Away from our neatly boxed lives, we feel a ourselves expand to meet the wide horizons of the world we find ourselves in.
The last pair of boots I wore out got left on a stoop in El Chalten in Patagonia. After braving glaciers, mud, and mountain trails for miles on end, my old leather Vasques finally collapsed. I like to think of them on that stoop, like an old horse put out to pasture, as the sun splashed dawn red over the Fitzroy peak. Let's hear it for walking.
